What job/study are you doing right now and tell us a little about it?
Warehouseman Sainsburys Haydock. When I left school I wanted to go into graphic design and tv advertisement but my mum and dad went through a sad time together so I leave what I was doing and get a job in elderly care because at the time I was also looking after my gran at home so it was a natural choice. I started working within the Sainsburys supply chain in 1999 and I'm still here now.
Did you do any further/higher education?
I studied nursing care and focused my studies on Alzheimer's, I'm also a qualified FA football coach and have been involved with this for around 12 years.
How did you decide on your career path and what is/was most interesting about your work?
In truth because of the pay scheme, when I was in care the hours and wage wasn't very good and towards my later years in care I was starting my own family, it was a sad time because like most people in nursing no two days are the same and it was a very rewarding job but my family came first so I had to finish my career in nursing. When I came into the Sainsburys network there were a lot of career opportunities for me to take up and the job is very rewarding if you want to move into warehouse management.
Can you share a couple of fond memories of your time at St Cuthbert's?
I loved my time at St Cuthbert's, it's a wonderful school with wonderful teachers, I can honestly say if I could turn back time I'd relive my time there, remember the saying, once a cuthies kid, always a cuthies kid. I'm so proud to say my two eldest boys have both enjoyed their time at St Cuthbert's and next year my little girl starts and I'll be very proud indeed. Playing in the school football and rugby teams were a brilliant time and I made friends for life because of St Cuthbert's.
Did you have a favourite/influential teacher? What made them so important to you?
Mr Bob Birkett was the best teacher a friend there was, such a wonderful man who taught PE and was always around with that cheeky grin and wonderful sense of humor. Also Miss New who when we started in 1986 she was also pretty new to the school and was again always very supportive of the new students plus the fact all the boys quite fancied her.
What advice would you give our current students?
Embrace your time at Cuthies because time goes so quickly, enjoy your learning and get involved with everything you can because the big wide world is sometimes a tough place to be.
