What job/study are you doing right now and tell us a little about it?
I am currently working as a Civil Engineer in the Railway Industry. I am involved in various projects, producing detailed drawings, reports, specifications and structural design calculations where required. After 8 years studying engineering part time, whilst working as a CAD Technician and engineer full time, I will finally be graduating this July.
Did you do any further/higher education?
I attended Carmel college and studied: English Literature, Biology, Fine Art and Chemistry. I think went on the St Helens College to complete BTEC in construction. After this I attended John Moores University to study a HNC in Civil Engineering which then led me onto my degree in Civil Engineering.
How did you decide on your career path and what is/was most interesting about your work?
I was always interested in science and art (drawing/painting buildings in particular). After studying BTEC Construction as part of my work progression at the time, I decided that to be involved in the structural design of projects from start to completion, and seeing what you have designed be built in front of your eyes is very rewarding.
Can you share a couple of fond memories of your time at St Cuthbert's?
There were many good memories whilst at St Cuthbert's, but I think it was making such good friends who I am still in contact with today that was great.
Did you have a favourite/influential teacher? What made them so important to you?
During my time there, Mr Archer helped me progress from Year 9 onwards and always made sure I fulfilled my full potential. He was one of the main reasons I enjoyed science so much, and that is something I have taken further in my career and studies i.e. the science behind structural materials when designing with steel and concrete.
What advice would you give our current students?
It is important to enjoy yourself and make the most of your time at school, a good start in life can open up so many opportunities when you leave.
