What job/study are you doing right now and tell us a little about it?
I'm currently teaching English at an academy in Malaysia. I teach students from the ages of 4 to 18. This gives me the opportunities to learn more about other cultures and visit countries that would be much too expensive if I was travelling from England.
Did you do any further/higher education?
I studied Film, TV and Cultural studies and MMU and then went on to do a diploma in teaching at Carmel College.
How did you decide on your career path and what is/was most interesting about your work?
I have always been interested in film, so when a Media GCSE was introduced into our English class at St Cuthbert's, I was very keen to do it. This led to me teaching the subject at sixth form colleges. I saved up and decided that it would be a good idea to travel and get new experiences whilst I'm still young.
Can you share a couple of fond memories of your time at St Cuthbert's?
The water sport trips with the PE department in 2005 and 2006 are some of my best memories. The 5k run around the back field was also a great memory. Sausage on toast from the cafe was a highlight of most days.
Did you have a favourite/influential teacher? What made them so important to you?
I had two favourite teachers. One was Mr Gibbins who introduced me to the world of media. He was also my form tutor who had good ideas about making us aware of the world around us. He did this by sharing the news each morning. The other favourite teacher was Mr Jacks. He was always very patient with me, even though I was useless at French. He made every class fun and interesting.
What advice would you give our current students?
I would say that you should live your life. Don't just settle for what comes your way. You will be the happiest when you have new experiences.
