What job/study are you doing right now and tell us a little about it?

I have finally retired but keep busy looking after grandchildren, cooking food from different countries, gardening and growing my own produce. I've had a varied working life, using higher education to enable me to carry out various roles in the workplace. St Cuthbert's gave me a good grounding in education, to enjoy learning into my later years. Also, as sports featured heavily in my education, I have played various sports as an adult and encouraged my children and grandchildren to do the same. I'm 68 now and am still skiing. In fact go again in February.

Did you do any further/higher education?

I trained initially as a hairdresser and completed my City and Guilds. I retrained to become a Nursery Nurse when I was 33 years old. Due to a change of personal circumstances, I then went back to learning to become a Tutor in Higher Education, which led to management roles. In between, I have done various work related courses. I believe in life long learning. Nothing is impossible.

How did you decide on your career path and what is/was most interesting about your work?

I have always chosen my careers doing things I have a strong interest in and enjoy. I've worked with people of all ages, from various backgrounds and ethnicity. Luckily, I've had a wonderful, if not hard working life.

Can you share a couple of fond memories of your time at St Cuthbert's?

Oh I have so many! I remember being in the sports team with fondness and felt I belonged. I can't remember being under too much pressure whilst learning.

Did you have a favourite/influential teacher? What made them so important to you?

Mr Ludden, the Maths teacher was one I remember with respect and fondness, even though maths was my worst subject. That man had the patience of a saint with me. Also the Headteacher, Mr Grundy. He was a strict but very fair man, who was well respected with pupils. Miss Lowry, Deputy Headteacher was a strong woman and respected with a little fear thrown in. Our PE teachers were my idols and I thank them for giving me a love of sport.

What advice would you give our current students?

Enjoy every minute! School time passes so quickly. Learn what you can. Not just subjects but others' thoughts and ideas. Take advantage of the excellent education given and the resources at hand.
