What job/study are you doing right now and tell us a little about it?
I am a time-served Heating/Plumber/Gas Mechanical Engineer, for over 30 years now. I am also a Registered Foster Carer with Barnardo's, for the past 6 years.
Did you do any further/higher education?
Yes, at St. Helens College, City & Guilds in Plumbing Craft level 1 & 2 and Advanced.
How did you decide on your career path and what is/was most interesting about your work?
When I left school, we had to go on to a YTS (youth training scheme) scheme. I did various jobs which weren't very good, until I was placed at a company called North West Heating Services in Golborne, I had a fantastic 5 year apprenticeship from one of the greatest men I have ever met in my life, Mr John Gaskell. Being a Heating Engineer takes you into all sorts of environments, the good, the bad, and the ugly, but you kind of get prepared for all of that. Being a Foster Carer also has its own challenges.
Can you share a couple of fond memories of your time at St Cuthbert's?
The school trips were amazing and loved going to Lakes especially, with Mr Birkett and Mr Griffiths.
Did you have a favourite/influential teacher? What made them so important to you?
Mr Anderson our form and music teacher, he was such a nice guy.
What advice would you give our current students?
Always ask questions, no matter how hard you may think it is at the time. If you get stuck or are struggling, ask for help.
