Dan Young

What job/study are you doing right now and tell us a little about it?

I am currently head of PE and year 11 tutor at Olsen House School in Crosby, a school specialising in SEMH, ASC, ADHD and LD. No two days are ever the same, and pupils thrive in reduced size classes, allowing the opportunity for tailor-made learning unique to each pupil.

Did you do any further/higher education?

After leaving Cuthies, I studied at Carmel College, knowing that I was always heading down the route of sport or teaching, before studying Physical Education and Youth Sport at Sheffield Hallam University. St Cuthbert’s gave me the opportunity to return as a Teaching Assistant for 3 years after graduating, providing me with the foundations and experience prior to studying a PGCE in Secondary Physical Education at Edgehill University.

How did you decide on your career path and what is/was most interesting about your work?

If I was never going to make it playing sport, I was adamant that somehow I was always going to be involved in the sector. After leaving school, my fondness for working in the education sector grew, and I had made my mind up that I wanted to be a PE teacher.

Can you share a couple of fond memories of your time at St Cuthbert's?

I loved the WaterSports holidays to the South of France, I really enjoy being out in the sun taking part in Sport, but it was amazing being able to canoe down the River Dordogne and the Ardeche.

Did you have a favourite/influential teacher? What made them so important to you?

Mr Kersey-Brown was stuck with me for 5 years as my form tutor, and was always a person that you could turn to. Also, the PE department were always really supportive and their enthusiasm and style of teaching just helped me choose my career path.

What advice would you give our current students?

Take responsibility for your own actions and education, you can only get out what you put in, and take every opportunity that comes your way!
