Amy Hughes

What job/study are you doing right now and tell us a little about it?

I am now a fully qualified Solicitor having qualified in March this year. It was a long journey but was worth the hard work and is very rewarding. I recently got awards for Junior Lawyer of the Year and Case of the Year 2019-2020.

Did you do any further/higher education?

I went to Carmel College then LJMU to study Law. After that I did the Legal Practice Course.

How did you decide on your career path and what is/was most interesting about your work?

I have always liked helping people and I knew I wanted a career that allowed me to do this, it was either going to be through teaching, or in law. In the end I opted for law but the teaching staff at St Cuthbert's made my time at school so good that I am still thinking about going into teaching!! I do run a netball team in work now so that makes up for it slightly :)

Can you share a couple of fond memories of your time at St Cuthbert's?

I was heavily involved with sport at school, if I didn't have PE on my timetable that day I was gutted. I used to love staying behind for any kind of sport and my fondest memories are with the PE department! I do remember burying the time capsule with Mrs Gallimore and I understand that flattering photograph of me is now up in the school!

Did you have a favourite/influential teacher? What made them so important to you?

Mr Arkell was my form tutor and definitely my favourite teacher! High school was the best time of my educational life and he has played a big part in that. He treated everyone like adults and we really had a laugh with him. He used to accidentally steal all of my pens though! I have a couple of nieces and nephews at the school now and they're always telling me how much they like him too so he has still got it! Miss Hannah was a great teacher too and because of her, I still play hockey and netball to this day.

What advice would you give our current students?

At school I didn't really have an idea of what I wanted to do. I was set on becoming a PE teacher and then I got to college and really didn't like PE as it was so different to high school. This then put me off and pushed me to the law route, but now I still think 'what if'. I would say enjoy the time at school and if you are keen to become a teacher because of the teachers you may have been inspired by at Cuthies, don't lose track of that along the way.
